Track goes down in staging yard and designs are progressing

We have now started laying track in the Detroit Staging Yard. Here is a picture of the beginings of the yard.

We are also designing other parts of the layout like this Intermodel Yard.

A train on the Helix!

Loops 5 and 6

Loops 5 and 6 added to Helix now all that is left to do is connect the top loop to the mainline.

Here is a diagram of what the benchwork will look like. This might or might not be modified as planning continues.

Field Trip to South Oakland Model Railroad Club

We will be taking a field trip to the South Oakland Model Railroad Club’s layout on December 10, 2010. We are scheduled to be there at 7:00 p.m.

Working on the Helix

We have started working on the helix. I will be posting pictures here as we progress.

Here we are getting all the parts needed.

Here we have laid out one loop to test how the first risers will be done, and what incline we will have.

The first loop with cork laid and ready to lay track.

Wiring the track will be done this way.

The third row of cork on the outside is the bypass track directly to the staging yard.

Here we are checking for clearances with two long box cars to make sure they will be able to pass without hitting each other, or hitting the rods.

Helix base is complete

Well the Helix base is complete and set up. It is 48″ by 120″. It will have a bypass track on the bottom level and 2 tracks going around the helix. The inside track will be used to go down from the upper level to the lower level and the outside track will be used to go up from the lower level to the upper level. The distance from upper to lower levels is approximately 21″
